    Obituary of the Honorable Philip C. Rotondo
    Philip C. Rotondo
    , 82, of Jupiter, Fla., formerly of Newark, passed away Monday, March 29, 2010. He was born Feb. 4, 1928, to Charles J. Rotondo and Josephine (nee Cecera). The funeral is on Friday at 9:30 a.m. from the Megaro Memorial Home, 503 Union Ave., Belleville. Blessing is at 11 a.m. in Holy Family Church, Nutley. Visitation is on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Educated at St. Benedict's Preparatory School in Newark and the McAllister Institute of Mortuary Science in New York City, Mr. Rotondo was the manager of Charles J. Rotondo and Sons Funeral Home in Newark from 1950 to 1985. From 1985 to the present, he was the owner and manager of Rotondo Funeral Service in Belleville.
    Rotondo was elected Essex County coroner in 1961. He was elected to the Essex County Board of Freeholders in 1969, and served as the board's director in 1971. He was elected as Essex County supervisor for two terms in 1972 and 1975, and served as chairperson of the Essex County Civil Service and Personnel Committee. He was delegate to the New Jersey Association of Chosen Freeholders.
    In 1986 he was elected to the Essex County Charter Study Commission. Mr. Rotondo was a member of the Federation of Italian American Societies, the Essex and Union County Funeral Directors Association, of which he was a past president, the National Funeral Directors Association, and Essex Council Boy Scouts of America. He was past president of Eta Phi Alpha Fraternity and past president and former district governor of UNICO National of the Bloomfield Chapter. He was a member of the Youth Guidance Council Bloomfield, the Decent Literature Committee Bloomfield, North Newark Little League, Knights of Columbus Council No. 5184, North Ward Optimist Club, and the Columbian Foundation.
    Over the years, Mr. Rotondo received numerous awards from the Future Farmers of America, the Essex and Union County Funeral Directors Association, Circolo Progressivo Caposolese, Inc., Italian Tribune News for Community Service, Frank G. Megaro Civic and Welfare Association, the Bloomfield Chapter of UNICO National, Columbia Association for Achievement, Benedetto Croce Educational Society, Parents of Exceptional Children West Essex, Knights of Columbus Council No. 5184, Life Fellow American County Government, and the Essex County Mosquito Commission.
    Mr. Rotondo is survived by his wife, Grace (nee Caprio); children, Maria Rotondo-Santos of Nutley, and David Marciano of Los Angeles, Calif.; sister, Marie A. Rotondo of Mendham; brother, John P. Rotondo of Newark; grandchildren, Eugene, Carla, Lee, Ariana, Mina, and Marcello; great-grandchildren, Joshua and Scarlett. His son, Charles J. Rotondo 2nd, passed away in 1976.
