Our opening bid price is under the current melt value of this lot at the time of this writing (5.42 based on 5-15-21 price of .11 per U.S. ounce 925 sterling silver). This auction is for a beautiful lot of 7 antique matching Matthews Company sterling silver stemmed champagne or dessert cups, bowls, and/or coupes with etched crystal inserts. The bottoms of the cups are marked STERLING 73 below the Matthews Company mark. We are unsure as to exactly how old the set is but believe it dates to the pre-Hickok period of 1907–1936. The combined weight of the sterling cups (not including the etched crystal bowl inserts) is roughly 411 Grams (13.22 Troy Ounces / 14.51 Ounces). The combined weight of the cups and inserts is roughly 2 lbs 1 oz. The sterling components measure roughly 3 3/16“ in height. The base of the sterling components measures roughly 2 11/16“ in diameter. The rim of the sterling components measures roughly 3 11/16“ in diameter The cups measure roughly 3 11/16“ in height including the etched crystal bowl inserts. The rim of the inserts measures roughly 3 13/16“ in diameter. The sterling cups have aging, discoloration, scratches, scuffs, nicks, dirty and/or stained areas, and tarnishing to varying degrees (see pictures). These would be made all the better with a thorough polishing. The crystal bowls have light and deep scratches, scuffs, dirty areas, and manufacturing imperfections such as bubbles in the glass, otherwise known as a little character. They appear to be free of any chips, cracks, or repairs.
