Description
Helen Bertram (1865-1953): She was an American prima donna soprano and comic opera star, born Lulu May Burt. “Miss Bertram is one of the most beautiful women of stageland and is a singer of rare ability.” “exceedingly handsome face, pretty figure, graceful movement, and sweetness.” “The queen of comic opera.” She became known for her tumultuous private life, which included adultery, divorce, embezzlement, and bankruptcy. She had an affair with another actor while both were married and their spouses filed for divorce. Her third husband died from the effects of his morphine addiction. 1900-1932: 7 Broadway appearances, the last at age 66. 1914-1940: 3 films, the last at age 75. She died at the age of 88.She stands in a provocative, flirtatious pose with her rear end to the camera, looking back over her left shoulder, her left hand to her chin, and wearing a long floral decoration and ribbon in her hair, and a long dress with an apron tied with a large bow at the back.

Written on reverse: Helen Bertram in Foxy Quiller [Comic opera which ran from November 5-December 22, 1900 at the Broadway Theatre in New York City]. VERY RARE! I find no other examples of this photograph.
