Description
This listing is for a fine quality Scottish sterling silver tankard that was was made in Glasgow in 1852. The maker's mark is a bit rubbed but it looks like there is 3 or 4 characters with S being the last one. I have narrowed it down to JM & S which is J. Muirhead & Sons or WA & S which is W. Alexander & Son. Both were active in the 2nd half of the 19th century. Or it could be neither. The tankard is 4 3/4" tall to the top of the handle and and 3 1/2" in diameter. The weight is 6.03 troy ounces (187.7 grams).
Great condition for age. There are no distracting dings or dents and only a slight wobble when it is on a flat surface. I have only lightly polished this piece but it could use a more thorough polishing, especially on the inside of the mug.
