    Description

Ramie Austen (1870-?): She was a stage actress known for her remarkable beauty. From 1888-1894 she toured with the stage production of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. While touring with the play in Ontario, she and the lead actor overpowered a criminal in the act and used the prop handcuffs he was carrying to detain the suspect. 1889 reviews: “Beauty, Youth and Talent: This rare combination is found in Miss Ramie Austen, whose qualities are renowned. She is but a girl, and her ability as an emotional actress is without a peer, and is firmly quoted as ‘a well paying star attraction.’ She possesses a remarkable intellect, and various accomplishments. Her remarkable beauty, and wonderful ability created a sensation among the nobility of Europe. Never has an actress appeared who could so electrify an audience. Miss Austen possesses greater combined beauty of face, form and manner than the stage has ever known.” "Miss Ramie Austen displayed unusual dramatic power." 1890, San Francisco: She starred in “Guilty without Crime”. 1892: She performed in “Dangers of a Great City.” Her throat was injured as she was enacting a hanging scene from the play backstage for friends. Shouting a cue, a stagehand pulled her up by the rope around her neck! She retired from the stage in 1894.
She poses turned half-right, but facing front, wearing earrings and a sleeveless gown.
Photographer: [Charles] Eisenmann, Photo Artist, New York. Eisenmann was famed for his photos of circus freaks, but he also photographed Mark Twain and Annie Oakley.
Reverse: “Miss Ramie Austen” in pencil at bottom, with other pen and pencil notations.
Condition: Good, but with soiling and marks. Decorative scallop patterned cuts along bottom edges and bottom, created by the studio.
Extremely rare and probably unique. The only other photo of her is posing as the Statue of Liberty, c 1900.
