    1927 LULLABY BABY JUICE CUP
    NO MONOS!
    sterling silver
This darling juice cup is a rarity... Lullaby made many baby cups of typical size, but this is a tiny Originally was destined for hand engraving AKS, but never happened-- No monograms means you can add yours!
Baby cups were meant to introduce tykes to drinking their milk on their own...  But juice was limited, so watered apple or orange juice would have been just a taste or two for the Vitamin C.  Thus juice cups were proportionally smaller than milk cups.
So itty cute it could easily sit with dolls!!  Appc 1.25" x 1.5"
Comes in its original box as found.  Hallmarked for Lullaby Sterling (by Alvin -- See info below)
We are guessing the weight is appx 18g-20g based on our OLD postal scale, which offers NO accuracy.  So please note you will be bidding/buying "approximately" 18g-20g: the scale fluctuated, so this is a Plus/Minus weight.  No guarantees!
From a dear aunt's estate, who loved silver and invested in many many pieces (then new and now vintage!) plus see our other listings for more sterling rings, bracelets, brooches, and sterling charms + charm bracelets from her gift shop inventory, which she owned in the Fifties-Sixties in Michigan
See our other listings for other great vintage bangles!!
Lullaby by Alvin, plus Company History:
Founded in 1886 as Alvin Mfg Co. in Irvington NJ by William Haywood Jamoneau (1850s-1928).  Circa 1893, the firm became Alvin-Beiderhase Co when George Beiderhase (1857-1927) became partner, and they moved to Sag Harbor, Long Island NY.  Jamoneau was born in England in the 1850s, son of Birmingham silversmith Alvin Jamoneau.  His family emigrated to the US in the 1860s to New Jersey where Wm H. continued silversmithing. Partner George was the son of a German immigrant, Bernard Beiderhase, a silversmith. Son learned the trade from father, as well as he offered expertise in business affairs that boosted sales, controlled company record keeping, and strategized merchandise.  Renowned for some of
today’s rarest original sterling patterns --
    Avila (1868), French Scroll (1870s), Marie Antoinette (1890-1910), Marsailles (1890), Monterey (1895), and Cambridge (1899) --
(some still made today, but as repros)...Alvin’s early pieces are desirable as rarities because of the melting of pre-WW1 silver for the war effort.
In 1886 Alvin patented a process for depositing pure silver on metallic and non-metallic surfaces. In this process, the item was first coated with silver, then artists cut away silver to expose the base and create a design.  As lauded in the 1893 “Jewelers’ Circular” trade publication:
"Undoubtedly the most novel and at the same time artistic work turned out by this company [Alvin] is that known as Electro-Deposit goods. This class of work was invented and brought to a state of commercial success by this firm. It is applied to decanters, perfume and toilet bottles, carafes, claret pitchers, flasks, perfume atomizers, and in fact an almost endless variety of articles of crystal glass.
"The process is guarded as a trade secret; but briefly it may be said, that the article to be silvered is rendered metallic by a coating of silver deposited on the glass surface by the electric current. When this operation is successfully completed, the article is shown completely encased in its covering of pure silver. The article is then taken in hand by skillful artisans who trace the most intricate designs on the silver surface. The designs are of a continuous character and the intervening spaces are by another process cut away or removed, so as to expose the crystal surface in the interstices of the design. The article is then passed to the engraver, who richly embellishes the remaining surface. The engraved surface is then highly polished."
Alvin-Beiderhase Co were honored to be chosen as Official makers of World’s Fair Souvenir Spoons for the 1893-94 Chicago Columbian Exposition.  In 1897, they were purchased in full by Joseph D. (Dupery) Fahys (1855-1932) Company, manufacturers of watch casings, and operated under their A-B Co name as a subsidiary company.  Incidentally, Jamoneau went on to open and operate Academy Inc with sons Wm H. II, Leslie, and Rosslyn, makers of perhaps parquet flooring, as near as research reveals.
During their time making flatware, Alvin intentionally focused on historical and colonial patterns in direct competition with Gorham, so it is ironic they ended up as a subsidiary of Gorham.
From 1919 to 1927, the company operated under Alvin Silver Co. on Maiden Lane in NYC, particularly focusing on their patented silverplated flatware in 1925.  Mr. Fahys’s declining health led to the sale of Alvin, including all its dies and silver patterns, to Gorham of Providence RI, leading silversmiths to this day.  Alvin moved to Providence, operating as a division of Gorham under the name Alvin Corp.  One of the first major lines under Alvin at Gorham was Lullaby baby hollowware, marked simply “Lullaby Sterling” to attract a new market of customers. Searching on Alvin patterns often shows dates in the 1950s+  These are reproductions of the old dies, still lovely silverware, but the originals from 19C Alvin are highly collectable.

Some General Info re: Silver charms and bracelets in our listings
--FYI: it is not unusual for sterling charms to be unmarked from this era: many charms came unmarked on display sales cards that had the maker and metal info; as well as jewelry items under a certain weight did not have to be hallmarked.
--FYI: Rhodium is in the Platinum family of metals.
It was often used in the 50s-70s to plate sterling silver to avoid tarnishing,
In the Rhodium plating process, 925 Sterling Silver is given a nickel underplate prior to Rhodium plating. The nickel is magnetic and causes the magnetic attraction.
--FYI: Sterling 925 or Euro Silver 800, 835, 900 - vintage European silver is highly collectible.

PLEASE NOTE ABOUT THE CLOTHING/WEARABLES WE LIST: Any clothing /shoes/accessories we list are helping us to clean out our own closets, to empty boxes of stored goods from a friend’s boutique that went out of business, and to find homes for garments from catalog photoshoots. We sell as-is with no returns. We are now retired and moving things forward before we ourselves “move forward!!!”
---For all clothing/wearables we sell - new and especially used - we check for holes, tears, wear, spots, or any other imperfections before we list.  Whether new or used, we have made every attempt to note any flaws in our listings, but may miss something due to aging eyes and/or sheer ignorance about a particular item.
---We ask you to understand that even if we missed something in the description, you are still getting a BARGAIN compared to buying retail, so YOU may need to have the item cleaned, shaped, restored, refreshed, get a button replaced, stitch where threads have come loose, whatever...
----Many are just simply wrinkled from storage... Many can be worn as they are, but would benefit from a pressing or cleaning at winner's discretion -- especially worn garments, or even if clothing in new "store" condition, with or without tags, or New Old Stock, because they were once hanging on racks or in store displays, handled by shoppers, dumped in carts, possibly dropped, certainly tried on, some taken home & then returned to store, -- and/or often have a dingy look from dust and light soiling from handling, or evidence of being in storage.
THANKS FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING, LOOKING, & IF YOU PURCHASE --- WEAR/USE IN GOOD HEALTH!!!
