Description
Here for your consideration is a beautiful Gorham sterling silver carved green jade cup or compote circa 1875. The piece is 5 1/8 inches tall with a cup diameter of 4 7/8 inches with a weight of 194 grams. Features finely etched guilding over sterling silver decorated with orchids and flowers with stem and pedestal carved jade in floral design. No chips, cracks, or repairs. Not intended for use in drinking. Guilding is intact with only a few tiny minor losses. The original metal shaft that ran down from the cup to the base was in poor condition and has been replaced and upgraded with a sterling silver shaft and two screw in bolts securely in place (screw in bolts are not sterling). In addition a high strength adhesive was used to secure the finial on the inner base of the cup to the shaft. There is no shifting of any of the components on this piece, a very good job done by an experienced jeweler. It is very difficult to find this piece, let alone in this condition. A fine addition to any collection. When handling it is recommended to hold the piece with two hands...one hand with fingers at the stem with the piece resting on your palm.
Please review the photos carefully as they are an important part of the description and ask questions. The piece will be packaged very carefully and double boxed for a safe arrival.
