A ketoh, also known as a bow
guard, was worn by Navajo archers to
protect their inner forearms from the snap of their bowstrings.
By the 1870s, silver was commonly attached to the leather to give the wearer more protection. The designs of the silver ketohs gradually became more
intricate as they evolved into the decorative form they often take today.
This is a stunning Navajo ketoh, from its beautiful, brilliant blue Kingman turquoise cabochon (1/2" diameter) to the heavy gauge Sterling silver in the central piece (3" x 4") and the six medallions (1/2" diameter), as well. It has the traditional cultural design elements representing the Navajo place of creation, the four directional quadrants, and curved and linear features areas representing female and male ideals. The stamping is quite deep and well-executed. The brown leather is sturdy, as it would have to be to support the very solid
Sterling silver pieces. This is an exceptional piece and would
enhance
any collection.  It would also be a fine gift for anyone with an interest in archery or an appreciation of excellent craftsmanship.
