    Description

Perhaps the most distinguishable feature of Santo Domingo jewelry is the use of heishi made of shell or stone.  Indian Melo Voluta sea snail heishi has been strung to become this traditional necklace.  Volutes are attractive sea shells with distinctive markings.  The name voluta means forming a spiral curve.  Volute sea shells are spiral vase like shells with an aperture which is rather wide.  They're also noted for having a bulbous initial whorl at the tip of the shell.  Volute shells are found on coral sandy or muddy bottoms mainly in deep waters of tropical seas.
The heishi, although smooth and of uniform consistency, will have variations among the beads. There will be a variation in color and thickness or there might be a slight
imperfection in the shell or bead. This adds to its unique appearance.
The soft creamy melon color is distinctive to the Indian Melo Voluta sea snail.  This necklace is 32" long and has been strung on traditional string, no closure, slip it over your head.
Never out of style, Southwest jewelry is an investment in enjoyment to last a lifetime.
