    Description

This comes from my personal collection. I've collected Southwestern jewelry since the 1970's.
Andrew died in 1976 at the young age of 33, but not before establishing a considerable legacy
at Zuni Pueblo. He was married to Rosalia Quam from the '60s to mid '70s. Their children are Prudencia, Andres, Georgette, Tyler, Andrew, Eldred and Dwight, all noted carvers. Rosalia was the step-daughter of George Cheechee Haloo, a well known maker of fetish necklaces. His influence is clearly seen in the style of this fine bird necklace.
"Fetishes and Carvings of the Southwest" published in 1976 is a great resource for identifying fetish necklaces.  There
    is
information about Andrew Emerson Quam on page 15.  I will include this publication with the purchase of this fetish
    necklace.
The necklace is 29 1/2" long with sterling silver bench made beads and hook and eye closure.  I have not polished the sterling, it is in old original condition.  The fetish birds are finely done, very smooth to the touch with lots of detail. His distinctive birds are thin and flat with the wings and tail carved into the top. It is strung on string, old traditional style.  The heishi is turquoise and probably Santa Domingo made.  Fetishes are for protection or guidance.   Most birds are believed to carry prayers to the clouds and sky asking for rain and blessings.
Never out of style, Southwest jewelry is an investment in enjoyment to last a lifetime.
All Fetish measures approximately  1 1/8" long by 1/4" by 3/16"
Turquoise heishi is 2 1/2 mm round
Bench made sterling Beads are 6 mm round
    Total Weight = 30 grams
