The photo is a nice sepia brown and has good contrast.
DESCRIPTION:  This is an interesting antique Boudoir size Cabinet Photo.  It is captioned "Mogollon - N.M. - Looking East.  Skelley - Photo".  While there is a good deal of surface loss to the Cabinet Photo, the important portions are visible.  Miners are posing for the photo and there are horses and wagon teams.  Many buildings are visible.  One building at the left has a partially visible sign.  It is marked "......ON HOUSE" and we believe this to be Mogollon House.  We have noted the interesting portions of the photo.  Mogollon is now a ghost town.  When rich veins of silver ore were discovered on Silver Creek, its population was 3 to 6,000, and because of its isolation, Mogollon was one of the wildest mining towns in the West.  Today, there are a few permanent residents and there are businesses and attraction for visitors.  Old wooden and adobe buildings remain, and a trail leads to more mining buildings.  Mogollon Mining Area is in Catron County and is about 74 miles nw of Silver City.  The photographer L. A. Skelly was active in Silver City from 1888 to 1892.  In 1892, E. W. Baker was a brief partner.   Per the Appointments of U.S. Postmasters, Skelly was Postmaster of Silver City from 1891 to 1896.  The photo is a brownish color with a strong blue/lavender tone and has good contrast.  The corner tips are bumped and there is wear at some of the edges.  Please note there is a good amount of paper loss on the surface.  Regardless, many interesting parts of the mining town are visible.  There are a few specks and spots of foreign material, and we did not attempt to remove them as we were concerned with more surface paper loss.  Please study our scans for condition.  The Boudoir Cabinet Photo is 5 1/4 by 8 1/2 inches and we estimate it to be from 1888 to 1890 or so.  What an interesting early view of the Mogollon Silver Mine in New Mexico!
