Description
I'm pleased to offer this specimen of Philipsburgite with Cornwallite, Zalesiite, Chrysocolla, Conichalcite and Quartz from the Middle pit, Gold Hill mine, Gold Hill, Tooele County, Utah. The specimen measures 3.82 x 2.68 x 1.14 inches or 9.71 x 6.82 x 2.89cm and is from the Erich Laskowski (1949-2020) collection of Tucson, Arizona. I purchased the bulk of Erich's collection a few months ago in Tucson and had a friend over recently, an expert on Utah minerals, and he suggested that this is a pretty significant piece. He looked at a few dozen flats of Gold Hill material that Erich personally collected and this was one of the few pieces in that material that Erich did not collect. He purchased this from Tom Loomis (Dakota Matrix Minerals) on June 29, 2008 for . This is accompanied by one of Tom's awesome labels that indicates this to be from the Fred DeVito (1937-2004) collection of Oakhurst, California. Please pay close attention to the backside of Erich's handwritten label---it is a great example of how added notes can add greatly to the interest and value of a specimen. The notes are detailed and offer measures to the tenth of a millimeter!! Much of Erich's material carries similar notes...though precious few are this detailed. I'm horrible at taking photos through my microscope so I would implore interested collectors to check out the wonderful philipsburgite photos on mindat.org that show specimens from the Gold Hill mine.
I am woefully deficient on my knowledge of the Gold Hill deposit but can recognize some specimens from here. I am no doubt most familiar with the wonderful adamite balls on matrix but I am largely ignorant regarding the minerals that are best appreciated under magnification. My buddy spent a few hours at the house looking over dozens of flats of Gold Hill material and I enjoyed a crash course on the deposit. He has collected there many times and there's no one I trust more on Utah material (or sulfides!) than him. I have a lot of boning up to do as I have a LOT of material to sort through; fortunately, Erich's labels and notes will add immeasurably. He no doubt felt that this was a significant upgrade to the few that he personally collected at the mine.
I bought the Laskowski collection for the ore specimens but I did obtain very many Gold Hill and Majuba Hill pieces in the acquisition so please check back if interested in these or contact me with specific wants---there is a decent chance that I might have something of interest!

and I even offer FREE return shipping on any item that fails to satisfy for any reason---you can't go wrong. I'm reminded of the firm pledge printed on the old Foote Mineral Company mineral catalogs from more than a century ago,
"Quality of specimens is assured as we permit return of specimens at our expense."
Thanks for looking!
