Rare Sterling Silver Commemorative Chalice 800th Anniversary St Mary's Church

Presented is a rare English sterling silver goblet or chalice, commemorating the
800th Anniversary of St Mary's Church of Melton Mowbray. The chalice is an exact
replica of a silver communion cup made in London in 1630 and presented to the
church in 1631. This chalice is one of only 800 produced by renowned silversmith
Albert Edward Jones. Each chalice of the 800 represents one year of the eighth
centenary of the church, and each chalice is inscribed with one specific year of
the 800. This particular chalice is marked 'AD 1309.' The sides of the chalice
are engraved, one side with the Latin inscription “Calix Benedictionis” or “Cup
of Blessing” and the other with Melton Mowbray 1631.
The chalice is hallmarked around the side with the lion passant for sterling
silver, the anchor for the city of Birmingham, the maker's mark for Albert
Edward Jones, and the date letter W for 1971.
This piece is in excellent condition. There are no splits, no dents, no
monogram removals, and no repairs.
The chalice stands about 5 ¼ inches tall, measures about 2 ¾ inches in
diameter at the base, and about 2 5/8 inches at the mouth.
The chalice weighs 223.7 grams or 7.9 regular ounces.
