    Description

    Fantastic antique U.S. Mail "Letters" Mail Box carrying the coveted June 22, 1909 patent date. These were fondly called the "Drop Off" Mail Box. These boxes were mounted to buildings, posts and street corners all over town. Very early post box with original red, white and blue painted surface. All parts function. No lock mechanism. Retains the original hanging bracket. Cast iron rotating mail slot and 1/8" thick riveted cold rolled sheet steel construction. Built like a tank and weighs more than 50 pounds. It measures approximately 13" across 21" tall and 8-1/2" deep.  I believe the last of these boxes were made in 1955 and became obsolete by the late 1960s. These are getting harder and harder to come by. This particular mailbox would make a stellar candidate for a restoration project or could be cleaned up as it currently is. If it looks "wet" in the photos it is due to the quick cleaning I gave it prior to taking the photos for the listing.
